Three explainers that sit behind the numbers in the calculator. Each shows its arithmetic and names its sources.

Why these three

The calculator on the home page does one thing: it converts portions of food into teaspoons of table sugar with the same effect on blood glucose, and adds them up. A number like that is only as useful as the reader's understanding of where it came from. These articles cover the three questions that most often follow a first look at the figures.

The first is about the method itself. Glycaemic index and glycaemic load are easy to confuse, and the conversion to teaspoons adds a third step. What is glycaemic load? walks through each step with real numbers from Dr David Unwin's published charts, so every figure in the calculator can be recalculated by hand.

The second is about a specific comparison that surprises many people when they first see it on the charts: white and brown bread. Why brown bread is still sugar sets out the figures for both, alongside five other breads from the same chart, and explains what drives the values.

The third is about the other number on the home page. The calculator places each running total next to the amount of glucose circulating in an adult's blood at any moment. How much sugar is in your blood? traces that figure to its source, checks it with basic arithmetic, and describes what the body does as glucose from a meal arrives.

How the articles are written

Each article shows its working. Where a figure comes from a published chart, the chart is named. Where a figure is calculated, the calculation is printed. Where two published sources disagree, both figures are given. The articles describe what the numbers are and how they are produced. They do not recommend foods or diets, and they are not a substitute for advice from a doctor, dietitian or diabetes educator.
